What is it and Why is it important?
SAF is fuel produced by agricultural, feedstock (matéria-prima), used cooking oils, forest waste (desperdício), solid waste and even algae (alga, planta marinha). So, basically SAF is a new type of biofuel which have similar properties of that of a conventional jet fuel but with a smaller carbon footprint (measurement of the amount of carbon that their activities produce). Improving sustainability is important to the airlines, their passengers and – most of all – to the planet which will all benefit from this technology.
SAF VS Traditional Fuels
PROS
- SAF are produced from sustainable methods and recycles the waste products;
- SAF also helps the local environment and air to be cleaner and better;
- Any aircraft certified for using the current specification of jet fuel can use SAF;
- It provides carbon reduction of up to 80% compared to the traditional jet fuel.
CONS
- At the moment, production of SAF is limited;
- Another downside of SAF is that it is more costly than the traditional fuels.
